''Purple finger, no problem,''

Democracy became a color yesterday, and it was the color of kings. As hundreds of Iraqi expatriates departed polling stations in the Iraq Transitional National Assembly election, many held aloft their right index fingers, stained on the tips after being dipped in a purple dye.

The hue of royalty became a mark that these men and women, many of them former farmers and sheepherders, had voted in the election held at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds.
